Thomas Mann wasn’t just a German author—he was a world citizen.. His works resonate deeply across cultures and continue to influence literary and intellectual life worldwide. That’s why MANN 2025 is envisioned as a global literary celebration—one that transcends borders and inspires audiences around the world.

Thomas Mann's Work: A Mirror of His Time and Our Present

Even 70 years after his death, Thomas Mann’s works remain as compelling as ever—tackling political and social upheavals with remarkable insight. His personal transformation—from the politically cautious author of Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man to an outspoken champion of democracy during his years in exile—offers a powerful example of the challenges involved in embracing democratic ideals.

This journey makes Mann strikingly relevant today: How should intellectuals respond to political polarization? How can democratic principles be reimagined during times of crisis?

Mann’s works also captivate with their deep psychological portraits and timeless reflections on themes like art, illness, and human identity. His characters wrestle with tensions between tradition and modernity, artistic freedom and bourgeois stability—issues that remain just as pertinent today. In a time when identity and societal change are being intensely debated, Mann’s nuanced perspective on the complexities of human development offers valuable insights for understanding our world.

The Power of Many Voices

A central goal of MANN 2025 is to honor the rich complexity of Thomas Mann’s work. His novels and stories invite diverse interpretations—and we want to celebrate that plurality throughout the anniversary year. Expect readings in multiple languages, intercultural discussions, and creative projects that provide fresh ways of engaging with his legacy.

At the same time, we’ll take a critical look at the myth of Thomas Mann. His works are masterpieces—but they’re also products of their time, reflecting the contradictions and challenges of their era. Join us on this journey through Mann’s life and writings as we explore both his achievements and his complexities.
