The play follows Hans Castorp, who initially plans a three-week visit to his cousin in a sanatorium in Davos. He soon comes to appreciate the timelessness and detachment in the thin air. Seven years later, the thunderclap of World War I tears him from the "enchantment" of this luxurious refuge for an outdated European bourgeoisie and their search for life enhancement in an "atmosphere of death and amusement".
