LIVE VR production by RAUM+ZEIT
In May 1912, Thomas Mann travels to Switzerland to visit his wife Katia, who is undergoing treatment at Dr. Jessen’s Waldsanatorium in Davos. Together with the tuberculosis patients, the author joins the evening meal in the dining hall. This evening inspires him to write his seminal novel "The Magic Mountain."
This moment is reimagined by the art collective RAUM+ZEIT. Equipped with a VR headset, the audience immerses themselves in the scene of 1912 and encounters the unforgettable characters of the novel as they confront their creator: Hans Castorp, Clawdia Chauchat, Mynheer Peeperkorn, and Leo Naphta. Alternating between VR and stage reality, the early 20th and 21st centuries overlap, forming a picture of a complacent society that suppresses looming catastrophes. From this perspective, the masterpiece written over 100 years ago proves to be surprisingly and unsettlingly relevant today.
