A discussion will take place in the Orange Square at the Lisbon Book Fair on the book "The Scandal of Distance: A Reading of The Magic Mountain for the 21st Century." The event features the author, João Pedro Cachopo, in conversation with historian and critic José Pacheco Pereira. The discussion will be held in Portuguese.

Widely regarded as one of the great novels of the 20th century, Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain is celebrated for its philosophical depth and exploration of themes such as death, time, love, politics, and the meaning of life. In this essay, João Pedro Cachopo revisits Mann’s classic, situating it within its early 20th-century context while also examining its resonance with the dilemmas of our present age—an era shaped by rapid technological change and growing political polarization.

O Escândalo da Distância is part of the “Ensaio Aberto” series, published by Tinta-da-China in collaboration with IFILNOVA and PUC-Rio.
