Lecture by Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen
From his youth, Thomas Mann was an ardent admirer of Richard Wagner. The composer even served as a model for Mann’s own literary work. His "passion for Wagner’s magical art" remained with him throughout his life—but not without crises and transformations.
The appropriation of Wagner by Bayreuth and the German National Socialists deeply unsettled Mann, leading him to reconsider his views. Ironically, it was his defense of Wagner against such misuse that contributed to his forced emigration. His fascination with Wagner often bore the marks of a conflicted love.
Following the lecture, an apéro will be held.
