To mark the 150th birthday of Thomas Mann, this event invites participants to explore the subtle yet profound connection between his literary work and the radical transformations of modern music. The program centers on Arnold Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10-a milestone in music history marking the transition to dodecaphony. Under the guidance of Matthias Diener, cellist of the renowned Minguet Quartet, workshop participants will analyze and interpret this complex and groundbreaking composition.

Part of the Thomas Mann anniversary year, the event highlights the writer’s fascination with modern music-especially dodecaphonic works, which Mann reflected on both intellectually and symbolically in his writing.

The workshop concludes with a concert and discussion on May 30 at 7:00 PM, where participants and Matthias Diener, together with musicologist Valentina Dediu, embark on a musical and theoretical journey through Schoenberg’s sound world and its resonance in 20th-century European culture.
