Hans Geißendörfer's film adaptation of "The Magic Mountain" condenses the 1000-page novel into 2½ hours!
Hans Castorp intended to spend only three weeks visiting his sick cousin Joachim at the Berghof Sanatorium in Davos. Cut off from the events of the flatlands, he quickly loses all sense of time in the morbid atmosphere of this place. In this parallel society, he experiences love, illness, death, and philosophical confrontations with his fellow residents. After seven years, the outside world catches up with him: the thunderclap of World War I tears him back to reality. This elaborate film adaptation of Thomas Mann's masterpiece stays close to the novel and deals with life's grand themes just as its source material does.
