Storytelling performer Meike Rötzer brings the Nobel Prize-winning novel and all its protagonists to the stage.

When Thomas Mann began writing his family epic at the age of 22, he could not have foreseen that just a few years after its publication, he would receive the Nobel Prize for this debut novel. The sensation it caused shook not only the literary world but also his hometown of Lübeck: citizens anxiously checked the borrowed bookshop list to see, "Am I in it? And if so, how?"

Today, we can observe the subtle decline of a bourgeois family over four generations with much more composure. Before our eyes, a world with all its worries, hardships, and comically entangled characters in questions of morality fades away.

Actress Meike Rötzer narrates dramas and novels, bringing world literature to the ear. This is theatre for the ears and an entertaining key-a true master key-to the treasures of world literature. It is a message to our cultural memory before the written word. After the great success of “The Magic Mountain,” now comes “The Buddenbrooks”-not to be missed.

With Meike Rötzer’s storytelling performance, Kulturplatz celebrates the birthday of Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, who would have turned 150 on June 6, 2025.
